    Can You Refreeze Meat?

BY: Ben Rayl PUBLISHED: 21 Feb, '22 UPDATED: 21 Feb, '22 Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered whether you can refreeze meat after cooking? Yes, you can. It is a great way to extend its shelf life.

Many people choose to refreeze meat as it allows us to store our food for more extended periods without worrying about spoilage or wasting the food! However, some foods and meats need extra precautions to freeze them safely.

If you want to freeze these items, they should be kept in their original packaging and only thawed when you are ready to cook and eat them.

Is It Okay To Refreeze Meat After Defrosting?

If you have defrosted your meat, then you may wonder if it is okay to refreeze it again. The short answer is yes. However, certain precautions need to be taken when doing this.

I do not recommend that you refreeze meat after it has already been defrosted, as it will lose a lot of moisture, resulting in dry meat with no juiciness or tenderness.

That being said, you can refreeze meat if you have extra leftovers, as long as you thaw it in the refrigerator or in a place that has a temperature below 42 degrees Fahrenheit.

This is so that you can safely freeze the meat without the risk of bacteria. For instance, if you have used a microwave to defrost the meat quickly, refreezing it is not a good idea as this can cause bacteria to spread, and the meat will likely go bad or go off rapidly.

If you have taken all of the precautions and stored the meat safely in a Ziploc or an airtight freezer bag, then keep in mind that you cannot store it there forever.

For things such as roasts, chops, and steaks, you can store them in the freezer for up to a year, but if you have frozen ground meat or cooked meat, then it is best to only store them for about three to four months at the most.

    Can You Freeze Meat Twice?

The answer is yes, but only if you follow certain rules. First, make sure the meat does not contain any ice crystals. These crystals cause the meat to lose moisture and, as a result, make it dry out.

To avoid this, you need to remove the ice from the meat. Then, you can keep the meat in the refrigerator ready to use, or you can freeze it again if you choose to.

One of the most important things to remember when storing food in the freezer is to use proper containers. Make sure that you use airtight containers to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

I do not recommend refreezing meat after it has been frozen before and thawed, as this can lose a lot of the texture and integrity of the meat.

You may also run the risk of the meat developing microorganisms that could make you sick or make the meat go bad.

As a general rule of thumb, only thaw frozen meat if you are sure that you will cook and eat it soon. In addition, always check your meat for signs of spoilage after thawing or before cooking. This will allow you to check if it has gone bad.

How Long Can I Keep Frozen Meat?

    Freezing meat twice

When storing your food in the freezer, you need to consider how long it will last. Each type of food has different storage times, but most cuts of meat can be stored for up to six months.

This means you can freeze your meat once a month and still have plenty left over to make into various other delicious meals!

I say most meats can be kept for six months because some types of meat, like chicken, beef steaks, and pork, should not stay in the freezer for more extended periods. This is because they are more prone to drying out, which causes them to become tough and chewy.

So, if you want to store these meats for a more extended period, you should probably only store them for two to three months at the most.

The length of time you can store your food depends on many factors, including the size of the container you are using, the amount of food you are freezing, and the type of food you are putting in the freezer.

So, keep that in mind when deciding how long you should store it safely.

To maintain the quality of your meat, try to freeze it as quickly as possible.

By rapidly freezing your meat, you can actively minimize the amount of freezer burn on the food and prevent lots of ice crystals from forming and ruining the quality of the meat.

You can also reduce freezer burn by using the correct packaging such as airtight containers and Ziploc bags so that no air can get in and decrease the quality over time in the freezer.

You can also place meat in the freezer easily if it is vacuum-sealed in the packaging that you bought it in.

But, if there are any holes or gaps in the seal, you should wrap it again in cellophane or foil to ensure that no air can get into the meat.

    Recommended Storage Periods For Meat

    • Uncooked ground meats: 3 - 4 months
    • Uncooked roasts, chops, or steaks: 4 - 12 months
    • Uncooked whole poultry: 12 months
    • Uncooked poultry sections: 9 months
    • Cooked poultry: 4 months
    • Cooked meat: 2-3 months

    Conclusion

To conclude, you can refreeze meat if you have some leftovers, but it is best if you do not. Try only to thaw out frozen meat that you know for sure you are going to use.

However, it does happen, and you may need to refreeze the meat so that it does not spoil.

To do this, make sure that you follow all safety precautions and store the meat in a freezer-safe bag or another airtight container to maintain its quality for longer until you are ready to use it.

Just keep in mind that even if you store them perfectly, the longer you leave the meat in the freezer, the more the quality will begin to deteriorate.

So if you still want those steaks to be juicy when cooked, then do not leave them in the freezer for months at a time!
