I think we can all agree (with few exceptions) that nothing beats a mother’s home cooking. My mother’s food was the inspiration behind me starting this blog, and it is with nothing but fond memories that I look back over my childhood dinner times. There was a rule in our house that each of us kids had to help my mother in the kitchen one night a week, and it is from that experience that my love of cooking blossomed. There is something very precious and special about the entire family sitting down to enjoy a meal that we prepared together.
A few years ago, I asked my mother to put together all the recipes she had collected over the years. She gifted me with a huge volume of photocopied index cards and scraps of paper with recipes. I have put many of them up on comfortablefood.com with many more to come. Most of them are in her original form; others I have slightly updated.
Here is a small collection of my mother’s best dishes. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do!
This dish is one of my favorite to eat and one of the things I make most often. It’s easy to make and so comforting. My mother tried many different recipes – Julia Child’s was her favorite for a while – but then she settled on this one because it’s simple and lacks nothing in flavor. It’s become one of the top-viewed recipes on my blog for a very good reason: it’s amazing!
This frozen dessert was another of my mother’s staples when I was growing up. It’s also quite simple to make – as a mother of four children, she was always on the lookout for quick and easy recipes. It’s the perfect sweet treat for those hot summer days, so light, creamy and refreshing. I love it!
I have to thank my mother for my love of paprika. I’m obsessed with it to this day, and one of the main reasons for that is this dish. I add paprika to almost everything – it gives a smooth, smoky flavor that blends perfectly into almost any dish. This one is another of my favorite things to make. Simple, easy, delicious. Yum!
Another thing I have to thank my mother for is her sweet tooth. While meals in our home were healthy for the most part, something sweet was never lacking. She made these Oatmeal Fudge Bars all the time, and I loved finding them tucked into my lunch bag. Again, these are easy, simple and, oh, so delicious!
While my mother (with help from her children) did 99% of the cooking in our house, my father’s specialty was breakfast. I will always remember waking up to the smell of these delicious breakfast potatoes cooking in the kitchen. They’re hearty and good, they are the perfect way to start the day!
