    This recipe calls for active dry yeast because it is really convenient and straightforward to work with. It stores way longer than live yeast and takes only a few minutes to become activated when added to the milk and honey. Plus, there's no compromise on texture, taste, or flavor.

    Active Dry yeast- Keep a few packets on hand as it stores really well. It's a little slower than instant yeast. You need to activate the yeast with the warm milk and honey for about 5 minutes before making the dough.

    All-purpose/ Bread flour - All-purpose flour works great for this recipe. You can also use the same amount of bread flour. The difference between all-purpose and bread flour is the latter has more gluten in it, which is what gives most bread that spongy texture.

    Milk- Baking rolls with milk create a softer, fluffier texture than water. The saturated fat in milk helps hold in moisture and gives the rolls a richer flavor.

    Eggs- The all-star super-binding ingredient for baking! Eggs also add volume, a hint of savory depth to the flavor, and some extra color to these rolls.

    Salt- The salt balances the sweetness of the rolls and helps to control the yeast’s pace of rising.

    Honey- As a point of difference from other copycat Texas roadhouse rolls, honey still feeds the yeast and adds a rustic, bolder sweetness to the rolls. 

    Butter- So very, very essential. Full-fat butter adds that rich flavor to the homemade rolls and helps with keeping them soft. Once the rolls are out of the oven, use melted butter as a topping to brush it on for a golden-brown buttery finish!

    Freshly baked, copycat Texas Roadhouse rolls with honey cinnamon butter are the stuff dreams are made of! You can easily whip up this satisfying sweet butter spread by hand by beating the honey, powdered sugar, and cinnamon into a stick of softened butter. 

    Substitutions

    Butter

    You can swap the butter for lard, shortening, margarine, or even coconut oil. Bear in mind that these alternatives may alter the flavor of the roll recipe. Especially certain lards (beef or pork) and coconut oil.

    Honey

    If you are all out of honey, save yourself a trip to the grocery store and use the same amount of maple syrup or molasses instead. They are both natural sweeteners and offer richer flavors than refined sugars do.

    🔪 How to make

    Follow the cooking instructions below, and you'll be making these soft, fluffy Texas Roadhouse rolls again and again!

    Preparations

    • Get your kitchen ready before you start making the roll dough mixture.
    • Make a clear and clean bench to knead the dough to make these rolls.
    • Make sure to take the butter and egg out of the refrigerator an hour or so beforehand to come to room temperature.
    • This is also a good time to grease up the baking sheet and make the honey butter.

    Cooking instructions

    Step 1
    Bring the milk to a near boil and remove it from the heat when you see it begin to steam. Let it reduce to lukewarm, between 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit (26-33 degrees Celsius).

    Prepare the yeast mixture with the warm milk, yeast, and honey in a small bowl until well combined. Let it sit for 5 minutes. This gets the yeast started. You'll know it's working when the mixture starts to appear foamy.

    In a large bowl, mix 3 tablespoons of the melted butter, the warm milk mixture, the room temperature egg, and 2 cups of flour. Mix slowly until smooth (use a stand mixer with a dough hook if you have one. Otherwise, do it by hand).

    Punch down the soft dough and roll it out on a flat, lightly floured surface until it’s about ½ inch thick. Fold it in half and gently seal.

    To shape Texas Roadhouse rolls, cut the rolled dough into 24 squares of even size. Place the rolls onto 2 oven trays with lightly greased baking sheets. Cover them and let them rise for 30-40 minutes until they have doubled in size.

    It's important to measure out all your ingredients, as too much or too little of each ingredient can affect the final outcome of the bread rolls.

    Temperatures

    Temperatures have to be followed carefully. Make sure that the milk isn't overheated, and it cools down to around a lukewarm temperature. Otherwise, if it is too hot, you will kill the yeast!

    Faster rising

    To create the perfect warm space to help your dough rise quicker, turn your oven to its lowest heat setting for a few minutes, then turn it off and put the dough mixture in.

    These Texas Roadhouse rolls are great for storing at room temperature to keep them soft and also for freezing.

    Room temperature

    Store leftover rolls on the counter, wrapped in foil, or an airtight container for about 3 days.

    Freezer

    You can easily freeze leftover rolls by wrapping them separately in baking sheets, then in foil, for up to 6 months. Just take them out to thaw when you are ready to eat them.
