    🍽 Key Ingredients

The key to making homemade cream of chicken soup lies in how the sauce is made. The soup is made using common household ingredients and has a creamy texture that's full of flavor.

    Cream of chicken soup ingredients

Chicken - This recipe uses rotisserie chicken to speed up the cooking process.

Base sauce - The base sauce for this soup is a simple mixture of flour, butter, chicken stock, and milk

Vegetables - We like to add carrots and peas to our soup for some color and texture.

Garlic & onion - Minced garlic and onion add flavor to the base sauce.

Seasonings - Salt, black pepper, and thyme add flavor to the soup.

    Substitutions

    Chicken

If you don't have rotisserie chicken, you can use cooked and shredded chicken breast instead.

    Chicken broth

Instead of chicken broth, you could use vegetable broth.

    Whole milk

As a 1:1 substitute for milk, you could use half and half for a creamier texture.

    Additional spices

    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder

    💭 Cooking tips

    Consistency

If you find that your cream of chicken soup is too thick, add more milk or your own chicken broth until it reaches the desired consistency.

    📖 Recipe Variations

Although this cream of chicken soup recipe is delicious, you can make it even creamier, a little spicier, and with a delicious crusty pastry topping.

    Condensed cream of chicken soup

Adding canned cream of chicken condensed soup will give the soup even more chicken flavor and a creamier texture. You only need to mix one cup of canned condensed soup with the milk. If the soup becomes too thick, just add another ¼ cup of milk or chicken stock.

    Cream of chicken curry soup

If you like your food with a bit of spice, an amazing variation to this recipe is with curry spice. A tablespoon of curry powder added to the soup with the other seasonings will give it a yellow-tinted color, a wonderful aroma, and a lovely flavor.

    Chicken pot pie soup

This variation adds a homemade pie crust on top of the soup so that you can break it up and dip it. The chicken pot pie soup also combines bacon pieces and potatoes for a heartier more filling soup.
