    🌟 Why this recipe works

This Salisbury steak recipe is the perfect comfort food that's hearty, filling, and has a delicious gravy that will make your mouth water. It's ready to serve in half an hour, making it perfect for weeknight cooking.

The beef patties are made with lean ground beef, garlic, breadcrumbs, and seasonings, then pan-fried until they're nice and browned. The gravy is made with mushrooms, onions, broth, and a few other simple ingredients.

Lean ground beef is the perfect choice for Salisbury steak because it's lean and flavorful. The addition of garlic, breadcrumbs, and seasonings helps keep the patties moist and flavorful.

The gravy is what really makes this dish special. The mushrooms and onions give it a rich flavor, while the broth adds depth and body. A bit of butter and flour helps to thicken the gravy, giving it a silky texture that's perfect for spooning over the patties.

This easy Salisbury steak recipe is sure to become a new family favorite. And if you're looking for more delicious, smothered recipes, try our flavorsome smothered chicken with mushrooms and bacon or smothered chicken asiago, mushrooms, and spinach.

    🍽 Key Ingredients

Salisbury steak is a quick and easy-to-make recipe that uses minimal pantry ingredients and only one skillet to make the patties and gravy.

    Salisbury steak - ingredients 2

Ground beef - You'll want to choose lean ground beef for the Salisbury steak patties. The higher fat content in ground beef can make the patties greasy, so leaner is better.

Breadcrumbs - The breadcrumbs help to keep the patties moist and add a little bit of texture. You can use regular or seasoned breadcrumbs.

Worcestershire sauce - This adds a touch of savory flavor to the patties and makes the gravy extra delicious.

Egg - The egg helps to bind the ingredients together and keeps the patties from falling apart.

Dijon mustard - The Dijon mustard adds a little bit of tanginess and helps to round out the flavors.

    Salisbury steak - ingredients 1

Garlic - The garlic adds flavor to the patties and the gravy.

Onion - You'll need an onion for the gravy to give the sauce a rich, savory flavor and onion powder for the little hamburger patties.

Mushrooms - The cremini mushrooms add a lot of flavor to the gravy and give it a rich, earthy Unami taste.

Beef broth - The beef broth is the key ingredient in the gravy. It adds depth of flavor and body to the sauce.

Butter and flour - The butter and flour help to thicken the gravy and give it a silky-smooth texture.

Salt and pepper - Salt and pepper are used to season the patties and gravy to taste.

    Substitutions

    Ground beef

You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for ground beef.

    Breadcrumbs

If you don't have bread crumbs, you can use cracker crumbs or make your own by breaking bits of bread into a food processor and blending them until they resemble small crumbs.

    Worcestershire sauce

If you don't have Worcestershire sauce, you can use soy sauce or tamari.

🔪 How to make salisbury steak

This easy Salisbury steak recipe is one of the quickest and tastiest meals you'll make this year! It takes just under half an hour to make Salisbury steak patties and the delicious mushroom and onion gravy using my simple step-by-step instructions.

    Preparations

    • Cut an onion in half and make small half-moon slices.
    • Peel and mince the garlic cloves.
    • Wash and slice the cremini mushrooms.

    Cooking instructions

    Step 1
Make the meat mixture for the steak patties by combining the breadcrumbs, beef, mustard, 3 cloves of minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, egg, and seasoning in a large bowl.

    Step 2
Once the mixture is fully incorporated, form them into small 4 oval patties.

    Forming oval patties

    Step 3
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a tablespoon of olive oil, then cook the seasoned beef patties for 5 minutes on either side until browned.

Cooking the beef patties in skillet

    Step 4
Transfer the cooked Salisbury steaks to a plate, leaving the juices in the skillet, and add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook for 8 minutes until the liquid has evaporated and they're nicely seared, then transfer to a plate.

    Cooking of mushrooms and onions

    Step 5
Turn the heat down to medium and add the butter. Once melted, add the flour and stir for 1 or 2 minutes before adding in the beef broth bit by bit. Continuously whisk the gravy to avoid lumps.

Addition of flour and beef broth

    Step 6
Pour the Worcestershire sauce and add the garlic cloves into the sauce. Continue to whisk to get a smooth consistency.

Addition of worcestershire sauce and add the garlic cloves

    Step 7
Add the cooked onions, mushrooms, and Salisbury steaks to the brown gravy (and any juices from the plate). Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the beef patties are fully cooked, and the onion and mushroom gravy has thickened.

    Step 8
Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

    💭 Cooking tips

    Consistency

If your gravy is too thick, you can easily make it thinner by adding more water or beef broth.

    Only flip the steaks once

Resist the urge to flip or move your Salisbury steaks while they're cooking, as they need to brown completely on either side. Moving them around or frequently flipping them will cause them to break.

    📖 Recipe Variations

You can adjust this Salisbury steak recipe to your liking by making the mushroom sauce creamy or spicy and even caramelizing the onions first.

    Creamy sauce

For a creamier sauce, add ¼ cup of heavy cream to the mushroom gravy when adding the cooked onions, mushrooms, and beef patties.

    Caramelized onions

For a sweeter taste, you can caramelize the onions before adding them to the gravy by cooking them over low heat until they're brown and soft. This will take about 20 minutes.

    Spicy sauce

If you want a bit of heat, add ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 1 chopped chipotle pepper to the gravy when you add the garlic cloves.

    🥗 What to serve with

There are so many delicious sides that go well with Salisbury steak, from creamy mashed potatoes to egg noodles or rice. But here are a few other easy ideas to try at home:

    Roasted potatoes

These roasted potatoes seasoned with garlic and rosemary are the perfect side dish for Salisbury steak. They take just 45 minutes to make and go well with the beef and mushroom gravy.

    Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus

Another delicious side dish with a bit of bite and salty flavor is these prosciutto-wrapped asparagus spears. They're deliciously crispy and pair perfectly with the Salisbury steak.

    Buttermilk biscuits

These buttermilk biscuits are fluffy, light, and perfect for mopping up any gravy left on your plate. From dough to serve in just 25 minutes, these are the best buttermilk biscuits you'll ever try!

    🙋 Frequently asked questions

What mushrooms are best used for in this Salisbury steak recipe?

While you can use any type of mushrooms for this recipe, we recommend using cremini mushrooms as they have a richer flavor.

How to prevent the steaks from falling apart?

The best way to prevent your Salisbury steaks from falling apart is to allow them to cook for 5 to 6 minutes before flipping them. The browning of the steaks seals them and prevents them from falling apart.

    🧊 Storing and ♨️ reheating

Leftover Salisbury steak tastes just as good the following day as it does fresh, and it can be stored in the freezer for longer once cooled.

Fridge - To refrigerate the Salisbury steak recipe, simply transfer the leftovers to an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Freezer - Transfer the cooled leftovers to a freezer container and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Reheating - The best way to reheat leftovers is in the skillet for 8-10 minutes until the gravy is bubbling and the steaks are hot. You may need to add some more broth or water to make the gravy thinner.

Alternatively, you can reheat Salisbury steak in the microwave on full power at 1-minute intervals until piping hot.
